A bit late to this conversation, but if you're talking about Elementary then I really have to disagree.  Granted the first episode or two were a bit 'squirrelly' considering the changes they had made, but after it was settled out story wise I thought they did an excellent job of doing a 're-imagined' series based on Holmes.  It's a pretty engaging series over all, and I actually liked a lot of the changes once I got used to them.

Of course all that being said, it's completely blown away by Sherlock...  but considering that just about everything out there currently is as well, that's not really saying much.  Laughing

I'm sorry weslocke but Elementary is a Load of Shite. Sherlock Holmes is Not an alcoholic and Watson is Not an Asian women. So I will not accept elementary as cannon material.
It may be a good detective series, but it is definitely not a Sherlock Holmes show.

Like I said, it's a re-imagining of the Holmes mythos.  Holmes in Elementary is not an alcoholic, he is a recovering addict.  Watson is a physician turned 'sober companion', which actually fits quite neatly with established canon (with the exception that Elementary uses heroin as his addiction instead of cocaine, and Watson wasn't injured in Afghanistan/Iraq in military service.  The 'Sober Companion' allows the live-in situation without the disability aspect)...  Ie. The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter where Watson claims to have "weaned" Holmes off drugs. Even so, according to his doctor friend, Holmes remains an addict whose habit is "not dead, but merely sleeping", much as in Elementary

Casting Lucy Liu as Watson is no worse than them making Boomer/Starbuck female in the recent Battlestar Galactica, and again works very well to allow them to explore angles of the relationship (hopefully never romantic) that they really couldn't do with a male/male dynamic.

The show isn't meant to be canon by any stretch of the imagination.  It's more of "let's take the idea of these characters, place them in a modern American setting, neuroticize them a bit more, and see what happens".

And I stand by the fact that watching the show 'as a show', it's a very entertaining and engaging series.  Is it Holmes, no.  It is in no way faithful to the original story...  but they have done some interesting changes to established canon (for instance the season 1-2 finale/premiere).

Just saying "It's not the traditional Holmes, so I won't give it a shot" is the same as saying "I'm not watching the new Star Trek because Shatner's not in the chair, and Khan's not Latino".  I highly recommend taking it for what it is and giving it a decent shot.  You might be surprised.

I must say you make a very good argument and made some very valid points, I will forgive the show for its failings, but I still don't think ill be watching it anytime soon, but if it does happen to be on Ill take a look and withhold any judgement untill the end.
